She would have said yes. She was going to say yes, but after she hesitates a little too long, just after she finally draws breath in preparation, the doorbell goes.

“Dammit,” Austin says as seconds later someone calls his name. “It’s Annalise. I’d better see what she wants.”

And seconds later, he’s done exactly that. Gone. Vanished. Heading off to meet his sister. Almost as if he was never there in the first place. Except that she can hear him trotting down the stairs while already talking to his horrible sister. Horrible because she’s never thought Molly Mae was good enough for her beloved brother, and she’s always made sure to let her know that too.

Molly Mae decides not to dwell on that today. She keeps out of the damn way as well. Getting dry and pulling on some clothes. White lace knickers come first, and she’s just about to pull on the matching bra when she decides against it. Choosing to go au naturel and just dragging on a simple cotton sundress instead.

It’s warm enough outside, and she’ll have to get changed before they go out tonight anyway, so why bother with all the fuss of dressing properly now?

Besides, who is she going to see exactly? Nobody, because all she intends to do is take a long, leisurely walk in the grounds. On her own. With just the birds and the bees for company. Nobody to bother her. No conversation required.

It’s what she needs. A little alone time to contemplate life. And slipping her feet into some trainers and grabbing her sunglasses from the drawer, she makes her way down the servants’ stairway so as not to bump into Annalise.

Austin is liable to be a little cross that she didn’t come and say hello. Or ‘rescue him’ as he sometimes describes it. But she isn’t in the mood for her this morning. She isn’t in the mood for anything, really. She’d been looking forward to spending a bit more time with Austin, but now the old dragon is here, that’s not likely to happen.

“Oh, well,” Molly mumbles to herself as she heads out of the house. Again, using the servants’ entry in order to avoid Annalise and Austin, and isn’t it some evil form of karma that she should run smack bang wallop into Robert?

Literally. They collide and his arms close around her to steady her as she loses her footing, and the next thing she knows, he’s staring into her eyes and she’s staring into his and her entire body is alive with sensation.

“Robert,” she says, her voice all breathy and aroused as his hands grip her by the waist and don’t let go. “I’m sorry. I wasn’t looking where I was going.” But she does look up just at the moment and sees where Austin is looking.

He’s in the yard, of all places, standing there holding a planter while his sister Annalise is holding herself in such a rigid stance as she glares over at her and Robert that Molly Mae blushes furiously.
